St. Simons Island is part of the Golden Isles. The Golden Isles has been named Top Islands in the Continental U.S. by Travel + Leisure's 2020 World's Best Awards
St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Little St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island and Brunswick secured the number one spot on the list this year!
We arrived at The King and Prince Resort around 1:00pm. Our room wasn't quite ready for us, so we happily wondered the resort and headed into main street (also known as downtown) for a spot of lunch and a visit to the Welcome Center. As we travelled through the historic island moss-draped oaks lined the winding island streets, creating a picture-perfect image worthy of a Faulkner tale. We parked the car and began to stroll the cobble street, feeling an instant sense of community as we spotted local coffee shops, boutiques and artisan stores that offered so many unique goods. The island’s village was charming and unique, with kind and gentle locals saying "Good Afternoon" and "Hey there" as we passed them by.
That afternoon we decided to eat at Mullet Bay Restaurant
A laid-back atmosphere that offered the best outdoor seating on a large open aired deck. The restaurant offered a variety of daily fresh seafood, sandwiches, salads and more! The open aired deck had hanging light's all over it, along with palm and oak trees surrounding the building, which made us imagine how magical it would be to dine here at night.
The short drive back to The King and Prince resort was just a few minutes, which made us eager to ditch the car and just ride our bikes. Thankfully, we had brought our own bikes; however, there are bike rentals in multiple locations on the island if you choose not to bring your own.
Walking into our room at The King and Prince Resort was such a treat! The kind lady on the front desk knew we were celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and put us in the historic building overlooking the ocean, along with a special bottle of Champaign to greet us on arrival. Our room was cozy and perfect for just the two of us. That evening we sat out on our balcony to watch the glowing golden isles sunset softly disappear, with it's red glowing tones.
Over the course of the next few days, we adventured everywhere by bike. One of our favorite parts was biking to St. Simons Lighthouse Museum—a working lighthouse built in 1872—to the Bloody Marsh Battle Site, where, in July 1742, British and Scottish soldiers protecting colonial Georgia defeated a larger Spanish force in a battle that helped end Spanish incursions outside Florida. St. Simons Lighthouse Museum is located on the southern tip of the island and walking distance into main street.
We noticed this area was always occupied with local gatherings, and visitors mingling by the waters edge as ships passed by. You will also find in this area a boardwalk trail, community parks for picnics and a beautiful long finishing pier (free of charge).
One of the many great and some what surprising beauties about this island was it's many farm-to-table or fresh food restaurants. We are avid supporters of farm-to-table restaurants, and having so much option was such a treat. One of our favorites was Olive Oil and wine bar. However, in true Georgia charm where ever you choose to dine on the island you will experience a warm southern welcome.
Thank you, King and Prince Resort for such a wonderful and relaxing stay. We can't wait to revisit and explore more of the Golden Isles.
